New Apple security feature reboots iPhones after 3 days, researchers confirm

Apple’s latest iOS software includes a unique security feature that automatically reboots the iPhone after 72 hours of inactivity, making it harder for law enforcement and forensic experts to extract data. This feature, known as “inactivity reboot,” effectively locks the user’s encryption keys in the iPhone’s secure enclave chip, preventing thieves from accessing the device’s data with outdated forensic tools. While this poses a challenge for law enforcement, it does not completely lock them out. iPhones have two states that affect data access: Before First Unlock (BFU) and After First Unlock (AFU). Forensic companies often focus on AFU devices, as they are easier to compromise. Apple’s continuous addition of new security features has sparked controversy with law enforcement, who argue that it hinders their investigations.
