The bucket brigade device: An analog shift register

The TCA350 is a unique, fully analog delay line that functions by charging capacitors and using clock signals made up of non-overlapping negative pulses to move the charge through the device. The delay line, although effective, requires an active low-pass filter to clean up the output. Opening up the chip reveals intricate wiring and transistor components, with the aluminum interconnect layer connecting all the parts. While these devices are now obsolete, CCD camera sensors, a spin-off, are still used today and can move charge between pixels without any loss. The technology behind these devices is fascinating and showcases the evolution of electronics over time.
