Huawei has developed Magneto-Electric Disk (MED) technology combining an SSD with a tape system for warm and cold data storage. To combat potential disk supply issues due to US restrictions, Huawei chose to create its storage solution. The MED functions as a fast and cold storage unit with a unique design containing an SSD and tape drive. This technology may change the storage hierarchy, compressing it to just two elements: SSD and MED. Huawei’s innovative response to export restrictions could impact Western Digital and Seagate, with Chinese public cloud suppliers showing interest in using the technology. An SSD with a 60 TB capacity is also reportedly in development.
