Going Rogue

In 1998, Netscape announced that it would release the source code to its browser, sparking an open-source “revolution” that threatened tech giants like Microsoft. Linux, an entirely free operating system, was viewed as a potential threat to Microsoft’s Windows monopoly. However, Linux ultimately did not overthrow Microsoft, and the open-source movement did not completely uproot traditional software production practices. Instead, the modern software ecosystem has found a balance between the closed-source and open-source models. While the open-source movement has had success in back-end software and gaming tools, it has struggled to create software with mass appeal due to a lack of focus on design and user experience.
