Wood has made a comeback in construction, with mass timber being a popular alternative to concrete. The expanded main terminal at Portland Airport showcases the innovative use of glulam Douglas Fir in a massive canopy, highlighting the region’s local ecology and cultural traditions. Sourced from sustainable local providers, this project significantly reduces the new building’s carbon footprint. The airport’s design embraces the Pacific Northwest aesthetic, offering passengers a unique and biophilic experience. ZGF’s phased construction strategy allowed for non-disruptive expansion while doubling the terminal’s capacity. This sustainable approach sets a new standard for airport design, with future phases set for completion in 2026.
