Seagate: ‘new’ hard drives used for tens of thousands of hours

Heise.de uncovered a potential fraud where many readers bought new Seagate hard drives that turned out to be heavily used. One reader discovered drives with 10,000 and 15,000 hours logged, though they were sold as new. Seagate confirmed the drives were actually OEM models, not covered by the normal warranty offered on retail models. Over fifty readers reported similar experiences after buying drives from various retailers, including Amazon and Mindfactory. Seagate is investigating the issue, which involves SMART stats being reset to hide drive usage. While it’s unclear if fraud is involved, something has gone very wrong. Seagate has yet to comment on the situation.
