Akan Names

The Akan people of Ghana have a unique naming tradition where children are named after the day of the week they were born and the order in which they were born. These “day names” hold significance in relation to the person’s soul and character. Middle names have more variety and can indicate birth order, twin status, or an ancestor’s middle name. This naming tradition is shared throughout West Africa and the African diaspora. Notable figures with day names include Kwame Nkrumah and Kofi Annan. It is common for Ghanaians to have at least one name from this system, along with an English or Christian name.
