San Francisco homelessness: Park ranger helps one person at a time

Once homeless in Golden Gate Park, Kaine spent over 20 years living in the woods around Hellman Hollow, known for his deep knowledge of the park and semi-wild way of life. Despite attempts by park staff to remove him, ranger Amanda Barrows befriended him and helped him navigate the complex process of obtaining housing. Through persistence, patience, and trust-building, Barrows successfully housed Kaine in a Navigation Center. The heartwarming story highlights Barrows’ compassionate approach to homelessness outreach, emphasizing the challenges faced by unhoused individuals and the need for supportive services rather than enforcement.
