Researchers from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine discovered that Yellowstone bison, once on the brink of extinction, now form a single, interbreeding population following a successful conservation effort that introduced new genes to the existing herd. A study published in the Journal of Heredity found a change in breeding behavior in the park, prompting the recommendation to manage the bison as one large population. The bison population fluctuates between 4,000 and 6,000 individuals and appears to be genetically healthy and stable. This information will aid in the long-term conservation of this iconic bison herd in Yellowstone National Park.
