Modern Baby: A pioneering computer from Manchester

In 1948, in Manchester, UK, the first truly modern computer was built and run. After the success of the Colossus code-breaking computer in WWII, Max Newman led a team to develop a computer based on Alan Turing’s concepts and John von Neumann’s stored-program concept. The result was the ‘Manchester Baby’, a groundbreaking achievement in early computer history. The debate over whether the Manchester Baby or the ENIAC was the first electronic stored-program computer continues today, with both machines offering unique features and contributions. Despite being considered a ‘toy’ computer, the Manchester Baby laid the foundation for modern computers.
