Solar power has become the cheapest source of new electricity generation in many parts of the U.S., but the adoption depends heavily on market structure. Deregulated markets have rapidly embraced solar, while regulated utilities remain slow to change. Greater deregulation is needed to build a cleaner, larger-capacity grid to meet rising energy demand and ensure American competitiveness globally. Solar’s dramatic drop in cost-performance is unprecedented in energy history. Deregulated markets have installed more solar and grown faster than regulated markets since the 2000s, which could lead to dramatically cheaper electricity in the future. America must support entrepreneurs deploying solar at scale to compete with China and ensure resilience against geopolitical disruptions.
