Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne will resign effective Aug. 31 and issue corrections to five papers after a Stanford-sponsored investigation found “manipulation of research data.” The investigation revealed that Tessier-Lavigne had failed to correct mistakes in the scientific record on multiple occasions. While the investigation did not find evidence of fraud, it concluded that Tessier-Lavigne’s lab had subpar scientific practices. Tessier-Lavigne defended his reputation but acknowledged that Stanford requires a president “whose leadership is not hampered by such discussions.” The report also raised questions about a major 2009 Alzheimer’s study and allegations of fraud. Tessier-Lavigne will retract or correct at least five papers.
