In July 1983, Air Canada Flight 143, also known as the Gimli Glider, experienced a fuel shortage due to a botched metric conversion. The flight crew relied on manual dripstick checks to determine the fuel quantity, but mistakenly used the wrong conversion factor. As a result, the plane was operating with only half the necessary fuel. The pilots were able to safely land the plane in Gimli, a decommissioned air force base converted into a racetrack, turning the airplane into a glider. The incident demonstrated remarkable flying skills and luck, with no fatalities or serious injuries. The aircraft, a Boeing 767, remained in service until 2008.
