In this paper, Phillip Rogaway discusses the political and moral nature of cryptography. He argues that cryptography is a tool that rearranges power and has significant societal implications. The Snowden revelations, which exposed mass surveillance, prompt a reevaluation of the field of cryptography and its role in resisting such surveillance. Rogaway calls for a community-wide effort to develop more effective means of combating mass surveillance and emphasizes the need for the discipline to consider the moral and societal implications of its work. This paper accompanies an invited talk at Asiacrypt 2015 and a short book based on it is being prepared.
