The BBC Research & Development team is exploring social technologies and experimenting with the distributed collection of social networks known as the Fediverse. They have set up a Mastodon server at social.bbc where users can follow the BBC’s social media accounts. Mastodon is a federated social network, meaning anyone can run a server and each server can have its own moderation and membership rules, while still being connected to other servers. The BBC’s presence in the Fediverse aligns with their work to support a public service internet and decentralized data. This is an experiment that will run for six months to assess its value and potential risks.
