IBM and Hugging Face have announced that IBM’s watsonx.ai geospatial foundation model, built using NASA’s satellite data, will now be available on Hugging Face. This collaboration aims to widen access to NASA earth science data and accelerate climate-related discoveries. Access to the latest data is a challenge in climate science, and this initiative aims to democratize access to AI tools for analyzing large datasets. The geospatial foundation model, trained on Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 satellite data, has shown promising results in flood and burn scar mapping. The model can be further fine-tuned for tasks such as tracking deforestation and predicting crop yields. A commercial version will be available later this year. This collaboration aligns with NASA’s Open-Source Science Initiative and aims to build a more accessible and collaborative scientific community.
