Amiga runs Michigan schools’ heating and air conditioning systems (2015)

Summary: A 30-year-old computer, the Commodore Amiga, controls the heat and air conditioning at 19 Grand Rapids Public Schools. It was purchased in the 1980s with money from an energy bond and replaced a refrigerator-sized computer. The computer is responsible for managing boilers, fans, pumps, and monitoring temperatures in the school buildings. Although finding parts for the computer is difficult, it continues to run on a unique software and radio frequency system. If it were to stop working, a new system would cost between $1.5 and 2 million. However, it wasn’t prioritized for replacement with funds from a bond proposal in 2011.
