Pad kaphrao, a dish made with holy basil fried with minced meat, is a beloved staple in Thailand. It is commonly found among street vendors and in high-end restaurants and convenience stores. However, abroad it is often overshadowed by other Thai dishes like pad thai and green curry, and when it does appear on menus, the ingredients are often different from what is used in Thailand. To address this, Thailand hosted its first national pad kaphrao competition to find the best recipe. The goal is to educate people about the authentic ingredients and flavors of pad kaphrao and discourage controversial additions like baby corn and carrots.
