Percy Ludgate

Percy Edwin Ludgate was an Irish amateur scientist who designed the second analytical engine in history. He was born on August 2, 1883, in Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland. Ludgate studied accountancy at Rathmines College of Commerce and later joined Kevans & Son as an accountant. Working alone, Ludgate designed an analytical engine that utilized multiplication as its base mechanism. It featured several unique components, such as discrete Logarithmic Indexes and a memory system using concentric cylinders. Unfortunately, the precise mechanism of Ludgate’s engine is unknown. He passed away on October 16, 1922, and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery in Dublin.
