PostScript, the page description language developed by Adobe, has died suddenly in Sonoma, according to Apple’s release notes for macOS. The deprecation of PostScript was first mentioned in macOS Monterey 12.3, where support for inline viewing of PostScript files was no longer available. In macOS 13.0, the Preview app lost the ability to convert PostScript and EPS files. Finally, in Sonoma, the complete removal of support for PostScript and EPS was recorded. The likely reason for the removal is security, as PostScript has been found to have vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious code. Users who still need to convert PostScript files have limited options, including using Adobe’s Distiller or Artifex’s Ghostscript. It is also possible to run a late version of macOS Monterey in a lightweight VM to continue using PSNormalizer through Preview. Despite the demise of PostScript, PDF continues to be supported.
