Drinking diet sodas daily during pregnancy linked to autism in male offspring

A new study conducted by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has found a possible association between autism diagnosis in boys and the daily consumption of diet soda or aspartame by their mothers during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The study, published in Nutrients, revealed that boys with autism were more than three times as likely as neurotypical boys to have been born to mothers who consumed one or more servings per day of diet soda or equivalent amounts of aspartame. No significant association was found in female offspring. The researchers emphasize that further research is needed to evaluate these associations in other populations.
