Rapid Recovery from an Autism Spectrum Disorder After Treatment of Aspergillus

This case study explores the use of antifungal drugs in treating a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who showed urine markers consistent with Aspergillus colonization of the gastrointestinal tract. The child initially received treatment with an antifungal probiotic, which resulted in a Herxheimer reaction. Based on this response, the physician decided to try a more potent antifungal therapy, itraconazole. The child’s symptoms of autism completely disappeared within three months of treatment, coinciding with a reduction in urine markers of Aspergillus colonization. This rapid reversal supports previous articles suggesting that mold, particularly Aspergillus, may be a significant contributor to autism.
