Slovenia’s beautiful beehives turn apiaries into art

Slovenia has a rich history of beekeeping, with every village historically having at least one beekeeper. Today, approximately one in every 200 Slovenians tends to bee colonies. Slovenian beekeeper Peter Kozmus runs a honey farm with over 100 bee colonies and heads the breeding program for the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association. The unique AŽ hives, inspired by a leaf hive system, are smaller and open from the back. Over 90 percent of Slovenian beekeepers use these hives, which can be incorporated into the walls of apiaries. The hives are known for their colorful appearance and artistic panels that tell stories. The future of beekeeping in Slovenia looks promising as younger generations continue the tradition.
