Pretty good career and life advice

Young people often reach out to me for career advice, particularly in the fields of security and software development. However, I often hesitate to answer their questions because I believe the question itself may be flawed. I’m tempted to tell them not to pursue these careers, as focusing solely on a job can change a person significantly. A famous psychological experiment known as the Stanford Prison Experiment demonstrated how people’s behavior can completely transform based on their role in a simulated prison environment. This experiment taught me that one’s job can shape their perspective and actions. Therefore, I advise young people to carefully consider the impact their chosen career may have on their lives. By observing the older people in their desired field, they can gain insight into their own future. It’s crucial not to choose a career before discovering oneself, as societal structures often influence the choices we make. To truly achieve self-determination, one must challenge these supporting structures and embrace the uncertainty that comes with it. Stepping into the unknown can lead to significant personal growth and meaningful experiences. When it comes to career advice, I often encourage young people to venture outside the typical path and pursue unconventional endeavors that bring them fulfillment beyond monetary gains.
