“Google is clearly buying its way to squelch competitors“

Former Samsung employee Patrick Chang testified about the challenges faced by Branch Metrics due to Samsung’s default agreements with Google. Branch Metrics, founded by Alex Austin, struggled to launch an unrestricted version of its app-search software. Chang, who played a leading role in Samsung’s investment in Branch, advocated for a “carve-out” in Samsung’s agreement with Google to allow for the integration of a more powerful version of Branch’s software. However, this vision never materialized, and Chang left Samsung to start his own venture fund. MIT economist Michael Whinston also testified, discussing the concept of the “cellophane fallacy” and arguing that Google possesses substantial market power in relevant markets.
