EU Grabs ARM for First ExaFLOP Supercomputer, x86 Misses Out

Europe’s first exascale supercomputer, Jupiter, will be a win for Nvidia and a disappointment for Intel and AMD. The €273 million system will use SiPearl’s Rhea processor, based on ARM architecture, paired with Nvidia’s accelerator technology. The choice to exclude x86 chips, which dominate the top supercomputers worldwide, is a blow to Intel, which had invested heavily in building a chip factory in Europe. While Intel and AMD chips may still be used in Jupiter’s modular design, the focus on ARM reflects Europe’s push for hardware independence and reliance on homegrown CPU designs. Jupiter’s installation is set to begin in early 2024.
