RISC-V chip technology emerges as new battleground in US-China tech war

Pressure is mounting on President Joe Biden’s administration to restrict American companies from working on RISC-V, an open-source chip technology widely used in China. Some lawmakers, including Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Democratic Senator Mark Warner, are urging action on RISC-V, citing national security concerns. They fear that Beijing is exploiting open collaboration among American companies to advance its own semiconductor industry, potentially eroding the US lead in the chip field and modernizing China’s military. This represents the first major effort to regulate work on RISC-V by US companies. The move could complicate global collaborations and hamper China’s pursuit of chip self-sufficiency.
