Lost film of life in Brazil’s Amazon 100 years ago resurfaces

A long-lost Brazilian silent film has been rediscovered after nearly a century. Amazonas, Maior Rio do Mundo (Amazon: Longest River in the World) was stolen soon after its production in 1918 and disappeared completely a decade later. It was recently found in a Czech archive and confirmed by specialists in Italy and Brazil. The film, directed by Silvino Santos, is considered a rare gem of Brazilian cinematography for its subject matter, length, and composition. It features footage of the Amazon forest and its inhabitants, including the Indigenous Witoto people. However, the film is controversial due to its colonialist perspective and the information it fails to acknowledge about the exploitation and mistreatment of Indigenous communities.
