CA Gov. Newsom vetoes bill that would have decriminalized psychedelic mushrooms

California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that aimed to decriminalize the possession and personal use of hallucinogens such as psychedelic mushrooms. The bill would have allowed those 21 and older to possess psilocybin, DMT, and mescaline, but would not have legalized the sale of these substances. Newsom cited the need for further guidelines on regulated treatment and medical clearance before decriminalization occurs. Psychedelics have gained attention as alternative treatments for mental illnesses, but opponents argue that the drugs’ benefits are still largely unknown, and decriminalization could lead to more crimes. California voters may have the chance to vote on the issue in 2024.
