AI tidies up Wikipedia’s references – and boosts reliability

A recent study published in Nature Machine Intelligence suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) can help improve the quality and reliability of references in Wikipedia entries. The study developed a neural-network-powered system called SIDE, which analyzes whether references support the claims they are associated with and suggests better alternatives for those that don’t. SIDE is trained to recognize good references by using existing featured Wikipedia articles and can also scan the Internet for reputable sources. When tested, SIDE’s top choice for a reference was already cited in the article in almost 50% of cases. However, there is debate among Wikipedia users about the usefulness of the AI-suggested references.
