Systematic Review of the Neurocognitive Effects of Cannabis Use in Older Adults

This systematic review examines the effects of cannabis use on cognitive functioning in older adults. The review identifies 26 studies that investigate the cognitive outcomes associated with cannabis use in various populations, including healthy aging, neurocognitive disorders, and specific medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and HIV. The results suggest that higher doses and heavier lifetime use of cannabis are associated with modest reductions in cognitive performance. However, the variability in cannabis products used, outcomes assessed, and study quality limits definitive conclusions. The review highlights the need for further high-quality research to better understand the effects of cannabis on cognitive aging.
