A third of chocolate products are high in heavy metals

Chocolate, a beloved treat for many, may contain harmful heavy metals such as lead and cadmium, according to Consumer Reports’ tests. Dark chocolate typically has higher levels of these metals due to its higher cacao content, but even other chocolate products like milk chocolate contain detectable amounts. Consumer Reports tested 48 different chocolate products, including cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and various types of chocolate bars and mixes. While no product exceeded California’s maximum allowable dose levels of heavy metals, some products had levels of concern. It is important to limit heavy metal intake, particularly in children and pregnant individuals, as these metals can cause serious health problems.
