Google Abandons Web Environment Integrity API

Google has announced that it will no longer develop its controversial Web Environment Integrity API, which was intended to combat online fraud but was criticized for resembling restrictive DRM for websites. Instead, the company will focus on a more limited version of the technology for Android WebViews, a version of its Chrome browser embedded within Android apps. The API was designed to authenticate browser clients using a cryptographic token, allowing websites to determine if visitors were legitimate users. However, critics feared it could be abused to limit web freedom. Google’s decision comes after receiving significant feedback from the technical community.
