Drunk grizzlies keep getting hit by trains in Montana

Since 1980, 63 grizzly bears have been killed along a rail line near Glacier National Park, Montana, due to getting “drunk” on fermented grain spilled from railcars. The bears likely die while attempting to outrun trains after becoming intoxicated. The worst year for these incidents was 2019 when eight grizzlies were killed. The area is home to the Northern Continental Divide grizzly population, and conservationists are concerned about the potential mingling of this population with the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem grizzlies. While trains are not a significant threat to grizzlies in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, vehicle collisions have caused deaths. Wildlife officials argue that not enough is being done to protect the bears from train collisions, and they suggest implementing measures such as noise makers or not loading train cars to capacity. However, the issue remains unresolved.
