Artist Rhim Lee’s TED talk on her “mushroom suit” has gained almost 1.5 million views due to her talent as a speaker and her innovative idea. The suit is designed to help nature extract nutrients from our bodies after we die. Although Lee’s idea has drawn attention to the process of nutrient recycling and detoxification, it is not grounded in scientific research. There is no evidence that the mushrooms she is using are capable of breaking down keratin, a tough protein found in hair and nails. Additionally, the role of bacteria and nematodes, as well as the complexity of fungal and mycorrhizal ecology, must be considered in designing a system for efficient nutrient recycling.
