The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has given the green light for the use of compulsory process in investigations involving artificial intelligence (AI) products and services. This resolution will enable FTC staff to issue civil investigative demands (CIDs) in AI-related investigations, similar to a subpoena, while still maintaining the Commission’s control over when CIDs are issued. The resolution will be in effect for 10 years and aims to address the potential misuse of AI for fraud, privacy infringements, and other unfair practices. The use of AI can also raise competition concerns if a few companies dominate the underlying technologies. The approval of this resolution was carried out through a unanimous vote by the Commission.
