Google introduced its Tensor series of chips with the Pixel 6 series in 2021 to support its AI-based software features. However, just three Tensor chips in, many of Google’s AI features need to be off-loaded to the cloud for processing. While Google intended its custom chip to deliver new capabilities for Pixel users, it hasn’t been as ambitious as Apple in developing fully customized Arm-based CPUs and GPUs. The first three Tensor chips were semi-custom designs, co-designed with Samsung LSI. The latest Tensor G3, despite some upgrades, falls short in handling Google’s latest AI algorithms on-device and is thermally inefficient. The future of the Tensor series is uncertain, and sales of the Pixel 8 series appear to be weak.
