The Yamaha DX7, a revolutionary synthesizer released in 1983, is still highly sought after today. However, thanks to emulators, we can now replicate its iconic sound on a budget. [Kevin] has taken this concept further by creating a portable Yamaha DX7 emulator on a little USB dongle using a Raspberry Pi Zero, Zero W, or Zero 2W. With the MiniDEXED DX7 emulator and a dongle adapter board, the Pi can run in USB Gadget mode, receiving MIDI commands and outputting sound. While there may not be much practical use for a DX7 dongle, it’s a fun and impressive build that showcases the capabilities of the Raspberry Pi’s USB Gadget mode.
