That time Verisign typo-squatted all of .com and .net

Approximately 20 years ago, Verisign engaged in a morally questionable practice by typosquatting all unregistered domains in the .com and .net top-level domains. This was possible because Verisign had control over the registry side of things, allowing them to easily manipulate the system. The consequences of this action were universally negative, causing problems such as users mistakenly sending emails to incorrect domains and web browsers redirecting to the Verisign site instead of displaying an error message. A group of system administrators quickly took action to address the issue. Over the next few days, ISC developed a feature for BIND to prevent such manipulations, and eventually, the situation resolved itself. However, other providers have continued to exploit DNS for their own purposes.
