The camel, the rope, and the needle’s eye

The existence of the word “kamilos” meaning “rope” in ancient Greek is highly disputed, and there is little evidence to support it. The myth surrounding this word is connected to a biblical passage about a camel going through the eye of a needle. Some believe that “camel” was originally meant to be “rope,” but these ideas were concocted to soften Jesus’ condemnation of wealth. The few sources that mention “kamilos” do so in relation to the word “camel” and do not provide independent evidence. One potential source, an inscription from Anatolia, is unclear and open to interpretation.
