A recent discovery of a system of six planets orbiting a nearby Sun-like star has provided valuable insights into how planetary systems are formed. These planets, which range in size from Earth to Neptune, are arranged in a resonant chain configuration, a rare phenomenon in nature. The discovery was made using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the European Space Agency’s CHaracterising ExOPlanets Satellite (Cheops). The researchers noticed that each planet’s orbital period was mathematically related to the next, indicating a 3:2 mean motion resonance. The system is a prime target for the James Webb Space Telescope to study the planets’ atmospheres and interior composition.
