A manuscript discovered by Professor James Wade from the University of Cambridge could provide insight into the sets of medieval minstrels and fill a gap in lost literature, according to an article published in The Review of English Studies. The discovery was made when Wade was studying the 15th-century Heege Manuscript and found a series of “nonsense poetry” including an annotated verse in which the scribe claimed “By me, Richard Heege, because I was at that feast and did not have a drink.” Wade believes the manuscript was a memory aid for local entertainers and suggests these previously unconsidered sources may offer a valuable glimpse into medieval live entertainment.
