China Jinping Underground Laboratory, located in Sichuan province, has become the deepest and largest underground lab in the world. The laboratory, known as the Deep Underground and Ultra-low Radiation Background Facility for Frontier Physics Experiments (DURF), is situated 2,400 meters below ground level. Scientists believe the lab’s extreme depth provides a “clean” space for them to study dark matter, as it blocks most cosmic rays that can interfere with observations. The DURF boasts ultra-low cosmic ray flux, low environmental radiation, and ultra-clean space, making it ideal for dark matter detection. It will serve as an interdisciplinary research center for multiple disciplines like particle physics and nuclear astrophysics. Ten teams from Chinese universities and research institutions have already begun conducting experiments in the DURF, with the aim to advance China’s research in frontier fields.
