Eleanor Cross

The Eleanor crosses were a series of twelve stone monuments with crosses on top that were built by King Edward I in memory of his wife, Eleanor of Castile. The crosses marked the resting places along the route taken when Eleanor’s body was transported to Westminster Abbey. Only three of the crosses survive intact, while the others are lost. The best-preserved of the crosses is the one in Geddington, Northamptonshire, which is unique in its triangular shape. These crosses served as expressions of royal power and encouraged prayers for Eleanor’s soul. They were larger and more ornate than similar crosses of the time.
