Cruise, the self-driving car subsidiary of GM, is laying off 900 employees, around 24% of its workforce, as part of a plan to cut costs following an incident involving one of its robotaxis. The layoffs primarily affect non-engineering positions, and the company is focusing on returning to service in a limited number of markets. Employees will remain on payroll until February 12 and will receive additional severance benefits. The layoffs come after nine senior leaders at Cruise were dismissed by the company’s board, and the company has been facing criticism for its robotaxi operations in San Francisco.
