Engineers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a method to harvest energy from air humidity in a consistent, scalable manner. The team created a harvester with nanopores, allowing water molecules to pass through and create a charge-imbalance that functions as a battery. This breakthrough builds upon previous research using natural proteins and a device called the “Air-gen.” The technology can be made from various organic or inorganic materials and has the potential for wide-ranging applications. The updated Air-gen device can operate day or night, in any weather conditions, making it a sustainable source of clean electricity.
