Evaluating New Software Forges

GitHub, while still the best platform for open source discovery, has raised some concerns with its Copilot offering and being a closed source forge. GitLab, the most popular competitor, is not fully open source and tends to follow along with GitHub. SourceHut takes a different approach, going against GitHub’s trends and offering a simple user interface. Codeberg, a fork of Gitea, has a limited CI capacity. Self-hosting using Gitea and Drone CI can be a viable option, providing full control over code forging. While still in the experimental stage, having one’s own space for code is liberating and convenient.
