PHOLED Will Transform Displays

OLED displays have become popular in cellphones and high-end TVs due to their sharp images, deep black levels, and wide viewing angles. However, they are not as durable or bright as LCDs, and their energy efficiency depends on the displayed images. Blue phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) materials are set to change this, as Universal Display Corp. (UDC) announces that they have finally achieved mass production of this technology. Blue PHOLEDs are more efficient and don’t generate as much heat, potentially leading to longer battery life for cellphones and cheaper and brighter TVs. Samsung is expected to be the first to incorporate blue PHOLEDs into their displays.
