Using artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning models, scientists have discovered a new class of antibiotics for drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria. This breakthrough, the first in 60 years, could be a turning point in the fight against antibiotic resistance. The researchers used deep-learning models to predict the activity and toxicity of the new compound, focusing on MRSA infections which can be life-threatening. They trained an extensively enlarged deep learning model using expanded datasets and were able to identify two promising antibiotic candidates. These compounds significantly reduced the MRSA population in laboratory tests and show potential for further development.
