Parents in Greystones, Ireland, have implemented a voluntary smartphone ban for primary school-aged children in an effort to curb anxiety and exposure to unsuitable content. The ban has won support from parents’ associations across the area’s eight primary schools, and is meant to be enforced not only at school, but also at home. The ban will bar smartphone usage until children reach secondary school, typically at the age of 12 or 13, and parents said it reached a critical mass that makes enacting it easier. The country’s health minister, Stephen Donnelly, has penned an op-ed in support of the ban, and has called for Ireland to lead the world in protecting children from digital harm.
